Ernest was the ninth of ten children of Oscar August Andersen (born 1854 in Norway) and Luisa Britton (born 1866 in Bunbury, WA). Oscar was a Seaman in 1889 when he and Luisa married in Bunbury, WA. By 1900 Oscar and Luisa were living at Boyanup before moving to Bunbury, where Oscar worked on the WA Government Railways as a Labourer and Ganger.

Ernest worked as a Labourer and Factory Hand in Bunbury, WA before enlisting in the ACMF in March 1942. He was a Private (Service No:W41555) attached to 18 Advance Ordnance Depot when he was Discharged in March 1946. He served in New Britain from 10 March 1945 to 6 March 1946. Nephew Frank Bertram Green (Trooper; Service No:WX17433) and Neice Rita Myrtle Richards (Private; Service No:WF91005) also served in WWII.

Returning to Bunbury, WA, Ernest was a Factory Worker until his Death in 1989.
