Crash Into Sea

London, Oct. 29. — Among recent tragic deaths on active service was that of a former Kalgoorlie resident, Sub-Lieut. Athol Smith, R.N.V.R., who was previously a member of the staff of the A.M. P.  Society In Perth, Sydney and London and was in the R.N.V.R. At the outbreak of the war he was called up and served as a signaller on a destroyer in the North Sea and at Narvik. After a course of  training he was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant and was second in command of a launch doing liaison work with the Bomber Coastal Command. He was in a bomber practising communication with the  launch when it crashed into the sea, all three of the occupants being killed.
