Godfrey was the third of seven children of Francis Stanley Ralley Richards (born 1888 in Leicestershire, England) and Ethel May Parker (born 1890 in Nelson, New Zealand). Francis arrived in Brisbane, QLD with his parents and siblings in December 1890 on board the Taroba. The family lived in Ipswich, QLD before moving to Woolongong, NSW  in the late 1890s. Stanley and Ethel married in Woolongong in 1909 and lived there before moving to Kurri Kurri, NSW in 1912. Francis worked as a Miner and Labourer. He served in WWI as a Private (Service No:224).

Godfrey was a Hairdresser in Thirroul, Woolongong, NSW when he married Linda Marie Johnston (born 1920 in Murwillumbah, NSW) in 1941 in Sydney, NSW. He enlisted in the ACMF in March 1942 and was a Private (Service No: N248923) attached to General Details Unit when he was Discharged (Medically Unfit) in June 1942. Brothers Ronald Charles (Flight Sergeant; Service No:403281) and Albert Ralley (Leading Aircaftman; Service No:6369), and Brothers-in-Law Sidney Stanley Williams (Private; Service No:N108723) and Robert Pead (Corporal; Service Nos:NX105699/N185597) also served in WWII.

Godfrey and Linda lived in Parkes, NSW where Godfrey worked as a Hairdresser. Following their separation in the late 1950s, Godfrey relocated initially to Woolongong before settling in Sydney, NSW. He worked as a Hairdresser until his death in 1980.
