Rhyce Jnr was the eldest of five children of Rhyce Hill (born 1883 in Durham, England) and Catherine (Kate) Mary Rawling (born 1894 in Durham, England). Rhyce Snr worked as an Ironworks Puddler in Durham before enlisting in the British Army. He served in India (1911) as a Private (Regimental No:641) and in France in WWI with Durham Light Infantry (Private; Regimental No:8964). Rhyce Snr and Kate married in Durham in 1913, and in 1924 they immigrated with two of their children to Fremantle, Western Australia on board the Jervis Bay. The family moved to Cowarumup, WA where Rhyce Snr was a Settler, before relocating to Perth in the mid 1930s. Rhys Snr worked as a Labourer, and served with the ACMF in WWII (Warrant Officer II; Service No:242822).
Rhyce Jnr worked as a Labourer and Truck Driver in Perth, WA before enlisting with the ACMF in January 1941. He was a Corporal (Service No:W4344) attached to 29th Garrison Battalion when he transferred to the AIF on 17 June 1942. Rhyce (Sergeant; Service No:WX34347) was attached to 2 Field Artillery Training Regiment when he was Discharged in September 1945. Sister Edith (Corporal; Service No:WF94080) and Brothers-in-Law Aloysius Edward Brennan (Driver; Service No:WX11873) and Joseph Stephen (Private; Service No:WX10040) also served in WWII.
In 1943 Rhyce married Lorna Ann Burke (born 1914) in Perth, WA - Lorna was a Dancing Teacher. Rhyce and Lorna settled in Perth, WA where Rhyce was a Shop Assistant until his death in 1977.
