Joseph Jnr was the sixth of eleven children of Joseph Stephen (born 1877 on the Isle of Man, England) and Caroline Ada Holloway (born 1885 in Croydon, England). Joseph (a Miner at Norsemand in Western Australia) and Caroline married in Bassendean, WA in 1907. They raised their family in Norseman, and relocated to Guildford in 1912. Joseph Snr worked as a Labourer and Fettler in Perth.
Joseph Jnr was a Labourer in Perth, WA when he enlisted in the Australian Army in December 1940. He served as a Private (Service No:WX10040) with2/28th Infantry Battalion and was a PoW. Joseph was Discharged in September 1945. Father-in-Law Rhyce Hill (Warrant Officer II; Service No:W242822), Brother-in-Law Rhyce Hill Jnr (Sergeant; Service Nos:WX34347/W4344) and Sister-in-Law Edith Louise Hill (Corporal; Service No:WF94080) also served in WWII.
In 1941 Joseph married Sarah Elizabeth Hill (born 1919 in Durham, England), and following his return from the War, the couple settled in Perth, WA and Joseph worked as a Haulage Contractor. In the early 1970s Joseph and Sarah relocated to Marmion at North Beach in WA, where Joseph worked as a Gardener. Sarah died in 2000 and Joseph in 2001.
