70 years ago today, on the Thursday afternoon of the 29th September 1949, Lieutenant James Snedden (M.I.D.), 34th Battalion (Machine Gun Section), miner of Vincent Street, South Cessnock, New South Wales and Medowie, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 63. ANGLICAN 3-174. 54.
Born at Broadmeadow, New South Wales on the 20th July 1886 to James and Catherine Snedden nee Hands; husband of Esther (Elsie) Ann Snedden nee Lambert (married 1910, died 1947), James enlisted January 1916 at West Maitland, N.S.W.
Wounded in action - 29.9.1918 (GSW hands and right leg, mild), Mr Snedden was invalided home February 1919.
His name has been inscribed on the Cessnock War Memorial.
Mentioned in Dispatches 7 April 1918 for gallant and distinguished services in the field (Villers Bretonneux and Ypres Campaign, manning a trench single handed against the enemy).

Unfortunately, there is no indication on Mr Snedden’s headstone of his outstanding service with the 1st A.I.F., so I have placed poppies in remembrance of James, his sacrifice for God, King and Country 100 years ago.
