Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

95 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 2nd February 1927, Private William McKersie, 34th Battalion (Reg No-853), labourer (Neath Colliery) and waterside worker from Little Denison Street, Carrington, and 159 Wilson Street, Carrington, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 31. PRESBYTERIAN-8NE. 24.

Born at Little Denison Street, Carrington, New South Wales on the 24th January 1896 to William and Elizabeth Cranson McKersie; husband of Phyllis Feodora McKersie nee Price (married 1925, Cessnock, N.S.W., possibly died as Fedora Phyllis McKersie, 1975, district unknown, 48 years a widow), William enlisted January 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 1.8.1917 (ulcer on neck).

Wounded in action - 29.11.1916 (GSW left ankle or foot), 12.10.1917 (GSW left hand, slight, 1st Battle of Passchendaele), 27.3.1918 (GSW leg), 8.5.1918 (GSW fingers, left hand).

William was invalided home February 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 17th April 1919.

Mr. McKersie’s name has been inscribed on the Carrington Citizens' Memorial Gates (photos, unveiled on the 23rd February 1924, 258 names inscribed, 40 Fallen), Carrington Municipal District Roll of Honor and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at William’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
