William was sent to France in June 1917. He suffered a gunshot wound to the chest on 20 October 1917 and was evacuated to Edmonton Military Hospital in England. Rejoining his unit in France in March 1918, Pte Mundy was killed in action on 5 April 1918, aged 20. He has no known grave. He was seen by an eye witness to have been shot and killed but his friends had to withdraw and leave his body where it fell.

William Mundy was one of three brothers who served in the First World War. His brother 3204 Private Reginald James Mundy, 28th Battalion, was killed in action at Pozieres on 29 July 1916, aged 20. An older brother 841 Pte Edward Murray (Ted) Mundy, 12th Battalion, served at the Gallipoli landing and survived four and a half years of war, returning to Australia in 1919.
