Elsie was the daughter of Percy Rutledge and Frederika Rutledge nee Holle.
Elsie enlisted as a Staff Nurse with the Australian Army Nursing Service on 21.8.1915 and embarked from Australia per "Morea". She saw service in Egypt, France and England and returned to Australia on 13.3.1918 per "Dunvegan Castle" on Duty. Appointment terminated by own request 30.9.1918
