Albert Edward Roberts, was living in Seddon Victoria when he enlisted. His father had passed away when he was 2 years of age and his mother Elizabet Merchant Roberts had raised him in Ballarat. He was a prominent member of the Footscray Swimming and Rowing Clubs. He was married to Florence May Roberts and the father of two small children.
His brothers both served in the 13th Field Company Engineers, 2650 Sapper Thomas Matthew Roberts, was killed in action 17 November 1916, aged 29. The other brother, 2652 Pte George Ernest Roberts, was severely wounded by shrapnel in the thighs, chest and right arm in September 1916 and evacuated to England. He was returned to Australia for family reasons by authority of the Defence Department, 6 June 1918.
