67 years ago today, on the 30th May 1958, Private Sidney Thomas Benton, also spelt Sydney, 1st Battalion (Reg No-60176), miner from Mine Camp, Catherine Hill Bay, New South Wales and Newcastle?, N.S.W., father of five, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 79. ANGLICAN 1-31. 14.
Born at Newcastle, (Glebe) New South Wales on the 24th November 1878 as Sidney to Arthur Augustus, died 14.3.1923, 4 Selwyn Street, Merewether (Glebe), N.S.W., age 73, buried at ANGLICAN 1-21. 39, and Clementina Benton, died 3.8.1931, Newcastle Hospital, N.S.W. as Clemintina, age 80, sleeping at ANGLICAN 1-21. 37, mother of 6? sons, 1? daughter, from 4 Selwyn Street, Merewether (Glebe), N.S.W.; husband of Mildred Alice Benton nee Keighley, married 1902, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 22.2.1955, Newcastle, N.S.W., sleeping here, Sid enlisted as Sydney on the 30th May 1918 with the 16th N.S.W. Reinforcements, September-November 1918 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A41 Bakara on the 4th September 1918.
Disembarked London, England 14.11.1918.
Allotted to 1st Battalion 14.11.1918.
Commenced return to Australia 31.3.1919.
Did not serve in a theatre of war, therefore was not granted Victory Medal.
Sid arrived home invalided suffering from rheumatism on the 16th May 1919, being discharged on the 31st May 1919.
Mr. Benton’s name has been inscribed on the Catherine Hill Bay War Memorial, Catherine Hill Bay Honour Roll of Soldiers and the Catherine Hill Bay Roll of Honour.
I have placed poppies at Sid’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
