Walter Leonard Silvester ATTLEY was born on 24th October 1889 in Northampton, England
His parents were Joseph Wallace ATTLEY and Emma FERRY - he was one of 8 children
He arrived in Victoria in February 1912 on the ship Geelong & married Jane SKURRIE in 1914 in Victoria and had two children, Beryl Emma & Wallace Leonard
He had previously served for 4 years with the Northampton Regiment (Territorials) in England before he enlisted in Richmond, Victoria on 8th September, 1917 for WW1 and embarked with the 23rd Infantry Battalion, 20th Reinforcements on 21st November, 1917 on the transport ship HMAT Nestor
He returned to Australia on 23rd July, 1919 on the ship Ulysses and was discharged on 25th September, 1919 - he was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
Walter died on 22nd June, 1950 in Ivanhoe, Victoria and was cremated the following day at Fawkner Memorial Park

His Father Joseph Wallace ATTLEY and two other brothers served in WW1 in England (see link to family story)
His brother Fred ATTLEY (SN3255) also came to Australia & served in the Australian Army and returned to Australia in 1919
His son Wallace Leonard ATTLEY (SN V335446) served in WW2 and died in Victoria in 1959
