Leslie James Mackrell was born in Geelong, Victoria. He lived in the town of Kyogle and worked as a farmer. He was Presbyterian. He enlisted on the 12th of August 1915 at the age of 21. He was part of the 11th Light Horse Regiment, 7th Reinforcement.
His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT SS Hawkes Bay on 23 October 1915. He became a Corporal and was returned back to Australia on the 20th of July 1919. His medals included the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal.
