Ian had to get written permission from his mother to enlist.

Serving in France he was diagnosed with Post Deptheric Paralysis on 29 July 1918 - was admitted to CCS 29.7.18 with sore throad, was given serum and discharged for duty at end of three weeks.  Diagnosis: Vincent's Augina (from swab).  Admitted 35th General Hosptial 4.9.18 with weakness of legs, absent knee jerks & blunting of sensation, also nasal voice.  Swab neg, for K.L. bac.   Admitted Endsell Street Military Hospital 24.9.18 with weakness of hands & slight of arms & some blunting of sensation. Marked weakness of legs & tenderness of calvas & blunted sensation of legs and fee.  Knee jerks absent.  Movement of soft palate present.

Returned to Australia 3 May 1919 per 'Leicestershire'.
