"Sid had served a long term in World War 1, as did his brother. He was badly injured in France and suffered reoccurring illness all the rest of his life. I remember going to see him in a hospital in Melbourne, before we were married. He was so sick at that time; he was practically on the death list. But he recovered, as he did many times in future years. He was a good joker and would say, 'I only recovered to annoy you.'"
