Early days and later

VERRAL ROSS CLARK (1945-2024)
Shoalhaven cricketers from the late 1960s, especially those who came here with the Royal Australian Navy, note the death on September 5 at Clelland Lodge of Verral Ross Clark, aged 79 years.
Born in Tasmania and known to his navy mates as “Nobby”, he joined the Albatross club in 1967-68 and showed promise with a knock of 72 against Greenwell Point seconds, and had figures of 5/79 against Trojans.
With more than 20 wickets in the home and away rounds, he was a key bowler in the semi-final against Wandandian at the Added Area that extended over two weekends and produced 770 runs.
Three bowlers did the lion’s share of the bowling with Verral taking 2/101, but they could not prevent Malcolm Bull and Harry White from hitting centuries, and Albatross went down by an innings.
Despite not playing all matches in 1968-69, Verral won the association’s second grade bowling average, his 23 victims costing just 8.69 runs apiece.
There were figures of 7/41 against Bomaderry, and 8/34 against Ulladulla United; and that analysis remained a team record until 1980-81 when Dave Coote took 8/17 against the same opponent.
Verral also hit 73 against Nowra, before naval commitments curtailed his SDCA career.
