2792261 Trooper Phillip Allen Mahoney
1st Armoured Regiment, RAAC
Phillip Allen Mahoney (Phil) was born at Crookwell, NSW on 26th Augustb 1948, to Jean and Allen Mahoney.
Phil was the eldest of four children with sisters Rosanne, Ashlea and Bronwyn.
He grew up on the family farm "Sunnyside" at Narrawa, some 30km west of Crookwell. He travelled daily on the school bus to Crookwell Primary School and won a scholarship to do his NSW Leaving Certificate at Goulburn High School. During this time he boarded in Crookwell and travelled by bus daily to and from Goulburn during school terms. Weekends and out of school terms were spent working on the family farm.
On completion of his secondary schooling, Phil gained entry to Yanco Agricultural College. Completing his agricultural qualifications, he returned to the family farm at Narrawa.
Phil was conscripted for National Service in 1969 and saw active service in South Vietnam. He served in 1st Armoured Regiment, RAAC as a driver of the Centurion tank. Initially with A Squadron from 30 Apr 1970 to 16 Dec 1970, he completed his service in Vietnam with C Squadron on 25 March 1971.
Upon discharge, he returned home to Narrawa and spent the next four or so years doing everything from shearing, wool classing and fencing contractor to name but a few hard earned rural skills.
He was active in all manner of community affairs including annual ANZAC commemorations, the Rural Fire Service and long term service with the Crookwell Sub-Branch of the RSL.
Phil continued farming until his untimely passing.
