Lyle Gilbert before enlisting was teaching at Nimmitabel NSW, and enlisted with the men in the march from the Snowy River in January, 1916.
He was killed when hit by shrapnel from shellfire in a trench near Proyart in France. His brother 4791 Private Leslie Edward Gilbert was severely wounded in Belgium during 1917 and was returned to Australia medically unfit.
They were the sons of Thomas Aaron Gilbert and the late Mrs. Catherine Gilbert, of Tumut, New South Wales.
