Richard was born in The Howe, Isle of Man in 1869 to parents William Northey Snr. and Elizabeth Watterson.
In followed his older brother William Northey Jnr. to Australia in 1903 onboard the "Innamincka". He was a shipwright by trade very much a family tradition.
