Postcards Home

Dear Annie
This is a model of the Stonehenge, & when one looks around you can see by the few stones that are still standing, that it was like this when built, & was meant for a temple. As stated on Bessie's card, they must of worshiped the sun & evidently figured out the time by it. In Bessie's you will see the sun rising over the stone some distance from the temple that is looking trough the main entrance, when standing on the altar stone, as seen in this one. The flat stone you can see in the round on Bessie's is where they used to behead their victims for it is surmised that they used to offer up human sacrifice there are other stones like the one the sun is rising behind & it rises & sets behind them on the longest & shortest days of the year It is very interesting when it is explained. I am well & happy, but awfully tired.
Au Revoir from your loving Uncle Joe

Dear Bessie,
Just a card to let you see that I have not forgotten you all. You will know something about this place, having read about it in your history. You will see by this that they evidently worshiped the sun. For they used the temple & certain stones placed out around to tell the time. It is very interesting & one wonders how they got the large stones on top. As you know we had a very exciting time the last day of the voyage, but apart from losing all our personal belongings, we rather enjoyed the novel experience. It was only by the coolness & desipline desplayed by the troops, that everyone was transhiped withour a mishap. Must close now with love from your uncle Joe.

Dear Annie & Bessie
Just a card as a souvenir of Villers Bretonneux. This is where the Mayor of the town used to live taken before the war & the other is taken since the war. so you can see how the Germans Knocked things about. Our artillery had a lot to do with knocking this town about as it was captured & recaptured about 3 times & the last time it was taken by the Australian with out a barrage & it took three days to clear the cellars of Germans

This is only one house of many the church is just a heap of bricks nothing more you can imagine shows the French people feel when they come back & find their homes in ruins but still they smile & carry on with their work. Well girls there’s not much news here, we are having real lazy time & when I get home I will not feel like working. We are billeted in a part of the Boys School or in french Ecole de Gascous & its sadly knocked about.
Cherrio for the present
From your loving Uncle
Joe
