Son of John Bernard Keenan and Mary Keenan nee White of Dalby, QLD. Brother of Daniel Keenan who returned to Australia on 1 July 1919 having been part of the Re-inforcements, Sarah Keenan, Mary Keenan and John Keenan

Commenced return to Australia on 13 March 1919 aboard HT Ulimaroa arriving at Melbourne on 19 April 1919 for onward travel to Brisbane

On the 4 April 1921 James married Marjorie Winifred Hourigan in QLD
