In Honour of Private Joe Palermo (3798772)
We pay tribute to Joseph (Joe) Palermo, known to many as Pte J.P. Palermo of 8 Platoon, C Company, 3 RAR, who served in Vietnam in 1971.
Joe’s tour ran from 12 February to 6 October 1971, a period marked by intense operations east and north-east of Nui Dat. He was involved in significant engagements, including contact with the D445 VC Battalion on 20 March 1971 and the attack on a bunker complex in June that same year — tough operations where courage and mateship shone through.
After Vietnam, Joe built a life in Geelong, Victoria. He was a devoted husband to Lina for 49 years, a proud father to Anita and Robert, and a beloved Nonno to Olivia and James. Joe passed away on 17 March 2024, leaving behind not just his family but also the legacy of quiet strength and service.
His funeral on 22 March 2024 at St. Mary of the Angels Basilica was a true reflection of his kindness, with donations invited for the Andrew Love Cancer Centre. Even in passing, Joe showed care for others.
We remember and thank Joe for his service, his loyalty to his mates, and the love he shared with his family and community.
Rest easy, Joe.
Lest We Forget.
