Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

85 years ago today, on the Saturday afternoon of the 26th September 1936 (3 funerals on this day), Private George John Searle, 34th Battalion (Reg No-1890A), bootmaker from Railway Street, Merewether, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 52. ANGLICAN 2-123. 82.

Born at Merewether, New South Wales on the 30th December 1883 to Alfred Rodgers and Bridget Agnes Searle, George enlisted March 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 8.2.1917 (tracheitis), 19.3.1917 (bronchitis), 14.5.1917 (bronchitis).
Transferred to UK 26.9.1917 (bronchitis).
George returned home December 1917, being discharged medically unfit (chronic bronchitis) on the 2nd February 1918.

Mr. Searle’s name has been inscribed on the Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the Merewether Public School Roll of Honor.

Younger brother James Alfred (30th & 36th Battalions, Reg No-5091, born 1887, KIA 4.4.1918) memorialised same location.

The headstone Plaque proudly tells us of the brother’s service with the 1st A.I.F., and I have placed poppies at the gravesite in remembrance of George’s service and the supreme sacrifice of brother James for God, King and Country.

Would probably be officially commemorated with a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque at the gravesite.

Lest We Forget.
