Michael and Patrick Scanlan were brothers from the town of Pittsworth in the Darling Downs farming area of Queensland. Both enlisted, but in different units. Patrick Scanlan was killed in action at the Battle of Messines on 7 June 1917, with the 47th Battalion AIF.

Patrick William Scanlan was killed in action three days later, serving with the 42nd Battalion. Patrick was 33 years of age and was buried in the Messines Ridge British Cemetery.
