John, a 13th Intake National Serviceman, did his recruit training at 2RTB Puckapunyal and Corps Training at 3TB Singleton.

He was posted to the Reinforcement Wing at Ingleburn, before being posted to SVN in May 1969 to 1ARU, then to 6 Pl B Coy 5RAR in June.

John completed his tour with 5RAR in March 1969 and returned with the Battalion to Australia to finish his National Service Duties.

John was also heavily involved with RSL Victoria.
