Ivor John (aka Lindsay Adolphus) Cochrane

Born as Ivor John Cochrane in Manilla NSW in Oct 1928 he enlisted in the RAN as a 18yo Milk Carter in Nov 1950

Training at Cerberus he later served on board HMAS Australia before being posted as "deserter" in Oct 1951

In Oct 1953 he assumed his brother Lindsay's name & enlisted in the Army competing his training by Feb 1954 & posting to 4th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment

1 RAR Korea 2nd Tour : He was allocated to Special Force Korea in Feb 1955 & subsequently posted to 1 RAR serving in Japan & Korea from 20 Feb 1955 to 24 Mar 1956

Appt L/CPL in Jan 1957 & posted to HQ 3 RAR in May

3 RAR Malaya 1st Tour : Serving with BHQ he was involved in the Malayan Emergency from Sep 1957 to Oct 1959 in anti-communist terrorist operations in northern Malaya

Posted to HQ 2 RAR in May 1963 & was appt T/CPL in Feb 1964

Allocated to A Company he was appt T/SGT in Jun 1965

2 RAR Vietnam 1st Tour : Serving as Platoon SGT in A Coy he deployed on operations to SVN from May 1967 to Jun 1968 under command of 1st Australian Task Force

During this first tour 2 RAR took part in 23 operations in Phuoc Tuy & Bien Hoa Provinces

Promoted SGT in Jan 1969

2 RAR Vietnam 2nd Tour : Serving as Pl SGT then A/CQMS in A Coy he deployed on operations to SVN from Apr 1969 to May 1970 where they conducted 7 back-to-back operations in their area & had the additional task of training & operating with Regional Forces & a neighbouring Thai Battalion

Promoted S/SGT in Sep 1970 he was discharged in Oct 1971

In 1985 he wrote to the Army citing why he had been deceptive & enlisted using his brothers birth certificate, name & DOB saying that in 1953 he was with 3 others at a party & there was a fight but he’d left but unbeknownst to him someone was bashed & robbed by one of the men he was with. A week later he was arrested & charged. Being the only one apprehended & although he supplied info of the people he was with, he got the full blame & was subsequently charged with assault being placed on a good behaviour bond. Prior to this he had always intended on joining the Army & knew he would be refused under his real name
