John Crisop Morris served twice in the South African (Boer) War and again in WW1. First service was as a Bugler S.N. 208, 1st Queensland Mounted Infantry, Boer War. Second service was as a Squadron Sergeant-Major S.N. 236, 7th Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse, Boer War. Third service was as a Lieutenant 13th Light Horse Regiment and 1st Anzac Army Corps Light Horse Regiment, AIF, WW1.
When he first enlisted in 1899 with the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Bugler J. C. Morris, single, Griffith St, West End, Townsville. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 1 p. 73, it is noted he directed part of his pay to Mrs. W. T. Morris (his mother), Griffith St, West End, Townsville. He served the full tour of the 1st QMI returning to Brisbane where he was discharged on 23 Jan 1901.
He enlisted again in 1902 with the 7th BACH and on his Attestation Paper, dated 1 May 1902, it was noted that; he was born at Townsville and was 25 years of age; he was single and a law clerk; his N.O.K. was his mother Mrs. W. T. Morris, Townsville; and he had previously served with the 1st QMI. The 7th BACH arrived in South Africa on 22 Jun 1902, after peace had been declared, and as a result just 6 days later embarked to return to Australia where they were disbanded/discharged 9 Aug 1902.
It appears he was training with the military at the Officers Training School, Broadmeadows, Victoria, while working as an Actor when he enlisted for WW1 and applied for a commission with the Light Horse. On his Attestation Paper, dated 24 Sep 1915, and his commission application, it was noted that, he was born on 13 Aug 1876 at Townsville, Qld; he was single and an actor; his N.O.K. was his mother Mrs. Margaret Morris, Griffith St, West End, Townsville; and that he had previously served in South Africa with the 1st QMI and 7th BACH and in Royston's Horse in the Natal Rebellion.
John Crisop Morris was born on 13 Aug 1876 at Townsville, Queensland, a son to William Thomas Morris and Margaret Morris (nee Chisholm). It appears he never married, and he returned from WW1 to Melbourne where his appointment was terminated 30 Mar 1918, and where he continued with his acting pursuits, passing in Melbourne on 15 Jun 1925.
