In an interview with noted Western Australian military historian and author, Dr Bill Edgar, John described how he received the first instalment of his Mention in Despatches: “All of a sudden I was summonsed in by the company commander, Murray Blake, and was told I had been awarded a Mention in Despatches. Then he paraded the boys and said to them: ‘I'm particularly pissed off with this because I recommended Blue for a DCM and all they've decided is to give him is an MID. I haven't got one to give him, so I hereby present him with my swagger stick until such time I can find an MID oakleaf!’”
