'Recommended by L. Col. MARTYN for conspicuous bravery during the night of the attack on LONE PINE in that he kept his party at work during the whole night under a heavy fire and that by morning communication was established between captured trench and old trench opposite LONE PINE. Mentioned in despatch from Sir Ian HAMILTON, G.C.B. of 28th January, 1916. Extract from London GAZETTE.'
