“Arthur Bowler enlisted in Melbourne on 28 June 1915, listing his trade as a motor mechanic. He included information that he had earlier been convicted of ‘driving on the wrong side of the road!’.
Arthur was initially appointed to 8/22 Reinforcements and later departed from Melbourne on 5 January 1916 on the ship HMAT Afric, and landed in Egypt and remained there suffering various illnesses.
On 1 June 1916, Arthur was again admitted to 2nd Australian General Hospital and later transferred to the 57th Battalion at El Kerber in Egypt. He was reported suffering from influenza.
Later he embarked on the ship Newhaven at Calais for England and taken on strength on 24 June 1916 in France.
Arthur Initially reported suffer from shell shock on 28 August 1916, on 31 August 1916 he was admitted to 4th London General Hospital located in the suburb Denmark Hill still suffering from shell shock. Whilst in England he was relocated to Weymouth from Dartford on 26 November 1916.
Arthur was returned to Australia on 8 April 1917 departing from Plymouth on the ship HT Barambah and subsequently discharged on 25 August 1917.”
