Son of Ralph Leyland and Charlotte Leyland nee Scott of Warrion, Victoria. Brother of Ralph Athelstone Leyland, Gertrude Ethelwym, Lucy Margaret Leyland, Annie Evelyn Leyland and Mildred Ruby Harriet Leyland

"Ralph Elvas Leyland, son of Mr. Ralph Leyland, who is head teacher at School No. 1308, Warrion, was born on the 29th of October, 1888. He attended the Melbourne High School in 1906-7, and was then appointed as junior teacher at School 1912, Hyde-street, Footscray, and afterwards at No. 759, Kingston. He passed through the Manual Arts Course in 1910-12, and afterwards had charge of woodwork centers at Charlton, Inglewood, and Colac successively. He showed a keen interest in his work, and was a good teacher and disciplinarian - vigorous, alert, and intelligent.
He enlisted on the 5th of November, 1914, and embarked with the 2nd Reinforcements to the 5th Battalion. After training in Egypt, he proceeded with his unit to Gallipoli. On the 28th of July, 1915, he was sent to hospital on Lemnos Island, sick, and died on the 1st of August."
