Biography contributed by Peter Bruce

As soon as Laurie was eligible, he joined the Army in 1952. Initially, Laurie was allocated to the Royal Australian Armoured Corps and the unit was the 1st Armoured Regiment but Laurie transferred to Infantry and ended up with the 1st Battalion (Bn) Royal Australian Regiment (RAR).

Laurie served in the Korean War from 07 May 1954 to 12 May 1955 with the 1st Bn RAR. Upon return, Laurie was posted to the School of Infantry for two years and then back to the 1st Bn (back then it was located in Brisbane). Laurie discharged at the end of his six-year term. Laurie worked on the wharves for J. Patrick & Coy (better known as Patrick Stevedores who got swallowed up by Garden Island). Laurie finished with the wharves in 1965.

With itchy feet, Laurie signed on again with the Army for another six years from 1965 to 1971. Off to Echo Coy at the 1st Recruit Training Bn Kapooka for basic training. Laurie was enlisted into the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps but wasn't too keen on that. He conducted his Corps training in Healesville and then was posted to Brisbane to his unit.

Laurie served in Vietnam from 17 Jan 1968 for 12 months and then again from 05 May 1970 for a further 12 months. The units he served with in Vietnam were 1st Australian Field Hospital and the 8th Field Ambulance for a total of 728 days. Laurie discharged in 1971.
