Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 12th October 1917, Private Arthur Ernest Cooke, 34th Battalion (Reg No-2050), farm labourer from 9 Laman Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales, was Killed in Action by enemy artillery shell fragments, 1st Battle of Passchendaele, age 39.

Born at Ashfield, New South Wales on the 24th April 1878 to James Elias (died 18.5.1925, Mittagong, N.S.W., age 76, name not inscribed at gravesite) from "Alphine", Colo Vale, N.S.W., and Sarah Ann Cooke nee Adams (died 31.3.1919, Ashfield, N.S.W., age 66); husband of Winifred Mary Cooke nee Alderton (married 1907, Sydney, N.S.W., died 27.10.1951, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 73, 34 years a widow) of 8 Robert Street, Merewether, New South Wales and 10 Berner Street, Merewether, N.S.W., Arthur enlisted on the 30th March 1916 at Tarro (Millers Forrest), N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A68 Anchises on the 24th August 1916.

Reported Missing in Action 12.10.1917.

Arthur’s name has been inscribed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial (Panel 23), Belgium.

Place of Association - Merewether, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

Mr. Cooke’s name has also been inscribed on the Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates, Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour, Woodberry/Tarro District Memorial, Woodberry/Tarro Public School, Book of Gold, Alstonville Public School Great War Roll of Honor, Casino and District Memorial Hospital WW1 Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at the memorialised Cooke gravesite in remembrance of the service and supreme sacrifice of their son Arthur for God, King & Country. ANGLICAN 1-53. 41.

Younger brother Reginald Crowther or Crouther (born 10.10.1887 Waratah, New South Wales, building contractor from the Newmarket Hotel, Hunter Street, Newcastle, New South Wales and the Changing Station Hotel, Islington, N.S.W., enlisted-21.2.1916, Field Company Engineers, Reg No- 14963, wounded in action - 18.1.1918 (gassed), ? 7.1918 (gassed, slight), RTA invalided 17.4.1919, 7th Australian Field Company Australian Engineers, died 14.5.1922, age 34, not married, not officially commemorated) resting same location.
