Pat was a good friend and an excellent drummer.
I first met Pat after my time in recruit school and the start of my training in the Navy School of Music at HMAS Cerberus in late 1964.
During that time at Music School and going on leave one year, we both flew (in a plane) for the first time from Melbourne to Sydney and we were both very nervous. We dressed for the occasion. Coat and tie was the accepted minimum in those days.
We spent time together serving on HMAS Melbourne - Pat was drafted a year before me in 1966, then I joined the ship in 1967. That was when Pat decided to become the best drummer in the Navy at that time. He practiced every night on his pads. He was relentless but the results soon became apparent, because he could perform vastly more difficult material than our full-time percussionists.
Later, during 1969 when we were both at Ceberus again and after I had taught myself to play bass guitar, we got work in "civie street" and that was most rewarding for both of us in terms of personal confidence and financially. Navy pay wasn't good in those days. For me as a bass player, Pat was exception to work with. We just clicked together.
I'm in my mid 70's today (13/3/2023) and still remember Pat with affection. He always has a cheeky smile on his face and dressed immaculately, even in uniform.
I will never forget you Patrick Joseph Elsley. RIP mate !!!
