Joseph left Adelaide on board the Afric on 7 November 1916 and disembarked at Plymouth, England on 9 January 1917. With the 22 / 10th Battalion he went to France on 19 April. He was wounded in action in France when shot in the buttocks on 6 May which necessitated Joseph being transferred to Guildford Hospital in England on 14 May. His sister was notified of Joseph’s circumstances on 31 May. After serving at Weymouth Depot, he returned to his unit on 20 November. Joseph was wounded a second time on 24 April 1918 suffering multiple injuries to his right arm and face and after receiving treatment in France he was admitted to Birmingham Hospital, England on 27 April. Upon being assessed as medically unfit, Joseph was returned to Australia on the D22 Arawa from England on 15 September 1918 and discharged on 18 February 1919.
