Son of Fred adn Sibelo HOOTON

In 1911 he entered Refrigerating Works branch of the Department of Agriculture, and acted as Officer-in-Charge of the State Abattoirs and Saleyards at Midland Junction.  He enlisted in Perth on 3rd October 1917 and was ready to embark with the 22nd Reinforcements of the 28th Battalion, but owing to medical reasons was sent to No 8 Australian General Hospital for treatment.  Embarked eventually with the 3rd G.S. reinforcements on board the A36 Boonah.  Proceeded to South Africa, and returned per same ship owing to the signing of Armistice.  During the return voyage, hundreds of men contracted the Dread Pheumonic Influenza, from which amonth others, Private Hooton suffered severley, both on the ship and at the Quaratine Station, Woodman's Point.
