William Harrold Chappell was born in Moonta. He was married to Mrs DC Chappell and living in Port Lincoln South Australia prior to enlistment. He was a Methodist standing at 5 feet 8 inches while weighing 165 lbs. His facial description was that he had blue eyes and brown eyes.

 At the age of 23 Chappell passed an exam of organic chemistry to become a chemist in Adelaide on Friday, 18th September 1908. On 24th March he enlisted into the army in Adelaide given the regimental number 16246. Once enlisting 5 days later became a private in AAMC (Australian Army Medical Corp) and sent to Mitcham Camp in Adelaide for training on 1st April 1916 to 31st July 1916.

He embarked to England on 16th December 1916 by the H.M.A.T.  A35 “BERRIMA” from Adelaide. Arriving in Devonport, England on February 16th, 1917.  He was sailed from Devonport to BASE A.M.O and served as a duty dispenser. He sailed back to Adelaide on May 23rd, 1917, by the Ayrshire Arr. He arrived in Adelaide on June 30th, 1917, and was discharged on August 6th, 1917, because he was no longer required on transport duty.

 He spent 1 year and 151 days in the army with 214 days abroad with his character described as “good” by an officer in charge at base records.
