Daughter of William T LITTLE and Adelaide C nee SWAIN of Bundarra, New South Wales
Married WATERFORD
Ivy, the daughter of William Thomas Little, was born in the Uralla district NSW. She trained at the Bundarra Hospital where she was the first probationer appointed after the hospital opened in 1912.
Ivy enlisted in September 1917. As a Staff Nurse she sailed from Australia per SS Wiltshire in November 1918, arriving in Bombay India a few weeks later. Ivy was posted to Deccan War Hospital, Poona, where she worked for seven months before being transferred to 19th British General Hospital (BGH) at Rawalpindi and then 18th BGH at Charial.
Ivy returned to Australia at the end of 1919. The Tamworth Daily Observer newspaper, 24 January 1920, reported that Sister Ivy Little had been present at a Welcome Home for soldiers at Bundarra where her War Service was also recognised and she was presented with a special medal.
Sadly, as recorded in her service papers held at the National Archives of Australia, the War Office in London deemed that she ' ... did not qualify for the award of the India General Services Medal, with clasp 'Afghanistan NWF 1919' or any commemorative war medal.' This was probably because India was not regarded as a War Zone..
Ivy married William Waterford at Bundarra in 1927. She died at Coonamble in 1989.
Sister Ivy Little is remembered at Bundarra where her name is inscribed on the War Memorial Honor Roll.
