Rodney (Daniel) was a close mate...
My name is Colin Harkin. Today's date is 13/03/2023.
I joined the Navy Band one year after Danny and served in various locations with him until I paid off in 1973. Danny stayed in the Navy.
Danny and I were both initially introduced to band music at the Newcastle Police Boys Club in Wickham during the very early 1960's. The Band Master, Frank Simm, was a huge influence on both of us, along with his son Geoff, who by this time, was already serving with the Navy Band.
My home-town was also Newcastle which meant that Danny and I travelled a lot together on weekends to and from our homes and Penguin on weekends the Band wasn't required for duty. Daniel was great company during those four hour trips and a real close mate. We had so much in common.
The one regret I have is not attending Danny's funeral. I can't recall why, but I was unable to get from Canberra where I lived at the time, to Newcastle. Ron, if you get to read this, I am sincerly sorry for not being there.
Danny died too young. I was shocked when I hear the news. He had met a girl and they were getting set-up for a future together. It was so very sad. I know that Rod and Audrey would have been devestated.
RIP Danny. You are embedded in my memory for ever.
