Geoff was a dedicated Navy Bandsman.

My name is Colin Harkin and I served with Geoff at HMAS Penguin during the late 1960's and eary 1970's.

Today's date ins 13/03/2023.

Combined with is father, Frank Simm, Geoff was a huge influence on my decision to also join the Navy Band. Frank was Band Master at the Newcastle Police Boy's Club during the 1960's onwards and he was a wonderful man. Frank, and Geoff's mother Dora, gave almost all of their spare time to teaching music to youg kids just like me at the club. Their enthusiasm and energy were endless.

I need to add here - Frank Simm was like a father to me. I loved the man !!!

Geoff would attend the club on band nights (when on Navy leave) with his parents and teach us how to march and to understand parade-ground discipline. The Navy Band in those days were expert when on parade and during Naval ceremonies. They took precision marching to another level.

Geoff, like his dad, was a great teacher. In fact, he was so good that when I joined the Navy at age 16, I was appointed Blue Card holder for my squad - because I could march and issue standard Naval voice comands.

Geoff was an accomplished saxaphone player and always involved in Big-Band or any other activities that didn't require all band members participation. He just wanted to play and be a part of what was going on. Everyone liked having Geoff around.

I met Pamela, Geoff's wife a number of times and I don't expect her to remember me, but I can assure her that Geoff will always remain a part of the fond memories I carry covering my time in the Royal Australian Navy Band at HMAS Penguin.

RIP Geoff.
