Richard (Dick) Quintrell was one of three brothers who enlisted from Moonta during WW1. Their father Stephen Quintrell had died in 1913. All three were single.
His older brother, 3886 Pte. Clarence (Clarrie) Horace Quintrell 50th Battalion AIF, was killed in action four weeks later at Pozieres on 16 August 1916, aged 36.
The third brother 2705 Pte. John (Jack) Adolphus Quintrell 32nd Battalion AIF, died at sea on the way back to Australia 1 September 1917, aged 37.
Richard was seen by one witness to be killed by machine gun fire during the attack on Fromelles, whilst in the enemy trenches on the morning of 20 July 1916.
From an article in the Adelaide Chronicle, Their mother passed away in 1934, 'Mrs. M. A. Quintrell, who recently died at her home, Moonta Mines aged 89 years, was a native of Cornwall, and at the age of three years she came to Australia with her parents, and went to Moonta when about 17 years of age. Her husband was the late Mr. Stephen Quintrell, who died many years ago, and will be remembered as a surveyor with the Wallaroo and Moonta Co. Three of her sons (Clarry, Jack and Dick) lost their lives in the Great War.
