Add my storyBiography contributed by Chris Buckley
John was the eighth of seventeen children of Thomas (Tom) Alexander McKenzie (born 1851 at 'Little Scotland' in Geelong, Victoria) and second wife Elizabeth Davies (born 1853 at Batesford, Victoria). Tom worked from the age fourteen with his family as a Timer Cutter and then ran his own bullock team as a Carter at Eclipse Creek near Meredith in Victoria. Tom and Elizabeth married in 1879 at Meredith, Colac, Victoria and raised their family in the District. In 1912 the family moved to South Gippsland where they share-farmed before settling at Wonga near Foster in Victoria. Tom was chasing pigs to market on horseback when he died in 1924. Elizabeth died in 1936.
In July 1915 John was a Farm Labourer when he enlisted in the AIF as a Private (Service No:3889) with 9th Reinforcements 22nd Infantry Battalion. He was listed as MiA in France on 5 August 1916, and reported as KiA on 15 September 1916. His body was not recovered. Brother Alexander William (Private, Service No:14716) also served in WWI.
John's name is located at panel 97 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial.
