Leslie's parents were John Tanner and Matilda Eleanor Berry who farmed at Whiteside. Leslie attended North Pine State School with his two brothers. Alan [20] and Owen [3024] both of whom enlisted in the war. Leslie was living at Toowong and working as a labourer when he enlisted on 8 January 1915. His unit embarked from Brisbane, Qld on board HMAT A7 Medic 2 June 1915. He served three years in the Moreton Regiment in Brisbane. He was discharged 12 December 1915 as not fit for duty. Leslie married Ada Ellen Hesketh in October 1922 at Brisbane. All three brothers returned home. Leslie and Owen were twins.
