Private Robert Johnston Caddell Taylor (Service No:141) initially served in the AIF from 18 August 1914 to 2 August 1915, and was attached to 6th Infantry Battalion on 19 October 1914 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for the Middle East on board HMAT A20 Hororata. On 4 May 1915, Private Taylor embarked from Suez for Melbounre on board HT Ceramic, and was Discharged (Medically Unfit) on 2 August 1915. Private Taylor re enlisted on 4 August 1915 and was attached to 39th Infantry Battalion when he was Medically Boarded and Discharged on 12 May 1916.

Robert was born in Sebastapol in Ballarat, Victoria in 1895, sixth of eight children of Richard Taylor (b1855 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Mary Ann Caddill (b1859 in Melbourne, Victoria). Richard (a Police Constable; No:3194) and Mary married in Melbourne in 1883, and lived in Ballarat and Melbourne where they raised their family and Richard worked as a Police Constable and Watchman.

Robert worked as an Engineer in Melbourne before enlisting in the AIF, and was a Railways Employee in Melbourne in 1919 when he married Beatrice Adelaide Kosky (b1897 in Melbourne, Victoria). Robert and Beatrice lived in Ararat and Melbourne, where Robert worked for the Railways. Beatrice died in 1954 and Robert in 1969.
