Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
The son of Edward Lawrence Murphy and Elizabeth Murphy. Born at Cootamundra, New South Wales. He was the brother of 2943 Pte. Leslie Joseph Murphy 54th Battalion killed in action, and Edward Michael Murphy who returned.
Henry enlisted at Ipswich in Queensland and fought at Gallipoli from 4 September 1915 with the 25th Battalion. He was evacuated sick with pneumonia during the freezing cold weather of November 1915. He wasn’t discharged from hospital until March 1916 and was then transferred to the 49th Battalion.
Henry was reported as missing during the heavy fighting at Mouquet Farm, and several witnesses claimed he was killed by shellfire. He was officially declared as killed in action during July 1917.
In 1933, 17 years after his death, Henry Murphy’s remains were found near Mouquet Farm, along with his identity disc and a cigarette holder in a case. These mementos were forwarded to Henry’s father in 1934.
