Leonard Herbert Kerr was one of four sons of Finlay John and Christina Kerr of Nana Glen, New South Wales, who enlisted during WW1. His younger brother, 1677 Pte. Arnold Oscar Kerr 49th Battalion was killed in action at Mouquet Farm during 1916, aged 21. The other two brothers returned to Australia.
Leonard married to Bethsheba Annie Blackman on 4 September 1916, only weeks before he embarked Australia for overseas service. He was seen to be hit by shellfire on the 4 October 1917 at Ypres in Belgium. His remains were never discovered.
