Bertie was the youngest of eleven children of Gustav Hermann Schmidt (b1884 in Samsonvale, QLD) and Margaret (Maggie) Ann Bell (b1880 in Samsonvale, QLD). Gustav - a Farm Labourer - and Maggie married in 1903 in Samsonvale, where they lived before moving to Kilcoy. Gustav was a Dairy Farmer in Kilcoy and Rochedale and in the 1940s relocated to Nanango where Gustav worked as a Labourer.
Bertie was a Labourer when he enlisted in the Australian Army and served as a Private (Service No:1400321) with 3rd Infantry Battalion RAR in the Korean War. Brothers Gilbert and Hector served in WWII.
Bertie lived in Nanango, Kallangur and Yeppoon in QLD where he worked as a Labourer. He died in 1998.
