Driver James Gridley (Service No:3095) enlisted in the AIF on 11 September 1916 as a Private attached to 7/4th Pioneer Battalion and embarked on 17 November 1916 from Brisbane bound for Plymouth on board HMAT Kyarra A55. On 16 October 1917 Private Gridley was WiA in France - GSW to the face and left arm, and embarked for the return to Sydney on 3 September 1919 on board HT Euripides. Driver Gridley was Discharged on 9 December 1919.
Born in 1884 in Eumundi QLD, Jim was the fifth of nine children of George Gridley (b1849 in Suffolk, England) and Edith Hannah Burrell (b1858 in Surrey, England). George immigrated in 1856, arriving in Moreton Bay with his parents and siblings on board the James Fernie, and Edith immigrated around 1868. George (a Timber Getter in Yandina, QLD) and Edith married in Brisbane in 1873 and settled at Yandina in the Maroochy Shire where George worked as a Timber Getter, Teamster and Farmer. In 1905 Edith took the children to Brisbane to finish their education and George followed in 1910.
Jim worked as a Timber Getter in Eumundi and was in Brisbane in 1908 when he married Rebecca Wilson (b1878 in Brisbane, QLD) - Rebecca was a Dressmaker. Jim and Rebecca settled in Eumundi where Jim worked as a Timber Getter. Rebecca died in 1946 and Jim in 1973.
