Herbert Gladstone Digance was born on March 25th, 1898, in the small town of Hawker South Australia. He lived with his father, John Digance and his mother, Margaret Elizabeth Digance. Herbert Digance had four brothers, James Henry, John Hasle, Thomas Edward and Frederick James Digance and three sisters, Florence Anne, Margaret Maud and Hilda Jessie May Digance.. As an adolescent, Digance worked as a labourer.
On the June 2nd, 1915, at the age of 18 years and 7 months, Digance enlisted into the army at the Keswick SA recruitment office. He was 5ft ‘8inches and weighed 70kgs. He had blue eyes and brown hair with a fair complexion.
He embarked for active service in August 1915 to reinforce the 10th Infantry Battalion. Soon after arrival overseas he was hospitalised with mumps on the island of Lemnos. When he recovered, taken on strength with the 50th Battalion and proceeded to France.
After WW1, Digance returned to Adelaide on May 1st, 1919. Herbert Gladstone Digance passed away on June 1st, 1961, at the age of 63.
