Alexander was the son of Joseph and Jessie May Hatcher, of Branxton, New South Wales. His younger brother, 1144 Pte. Thomas Harry Hatcher 34th Battalion AIF was killed in action 27 January 1917, aged 19.

Another brother, Mervyn Clarence Hatcher enlisted with the 35th Battalion AIF on the 30 November 1915 with his brother Alexander and was an original member of the Battalion. Mervyn was discharged ‘Medically Unfit’ during April 1916 by the Medical Board of the 9th Infantry Brigade.

Alexander went with the 35th Battalion to France during November 1916. He was wounded in action at Messines in June 1917 and evacuated to England. Three months later he was mortally wounded in Belgium on 1 October 1917. Hit in the hip by shrapnel he died of his wounds over three weeks later in hospital at Rouen, France.
